The deadline for NELFUND applications for the 2025–2026 academic year has been extended by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to February 27, 2026.
The Fund said in a statement released in Abuja on Thursday that the deadline, which was originally set for January 31, 2026, was extended to allow potential candidates more time to finish and submit their applications.
Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications, claims that the decision was made to guarantee that no qualified student would be left out of the process because of time restrictions.
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has announced an extension of the application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session from January 31, 2026, to February 27, 2026, the notification said in part.

“This extension reflects our commitment to inclusivity and access,” stated Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND.
This decision guarantees that every eligible Nigerian student has an equal chance to profit from the Fund, even though we recognize that some candidates may need more time to finish their submissions.
Students who have not yet applied or who have not finished their applications are encouraged by NELFUND to take advantage of the extended deadline and make sure that all necessary information is provided by February 27, 2026, at the latest.

The Fund added that further information and updates would continue to be shared through its official communication channels.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Nigeria Student Loan Scheme into law in April 2024, and NELFUND was created to oversee it. In order to assist with living expenses and tuition, the Tinubu administration provides interest-free loans to students enrolled in public universities.
The program, which aims to support students from low-income families and remove financial barriers to study, started applications in May 2024. After finishing their studies and finding work, loan recipients must repay the money. As of January 29, 2026, the total amount disbursed under the student loan program was ₦174,561,719,810.
