Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to sign the 2026 amended Electoral Bill into law before the end of February. The announcement provides clarity amid growing public interest and political debate surrounding recent changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework.
Akpabio made the disclosure on Tuesday during an emergency plenary session of the Senate, where lawmakers moved to address concerns raised over some controversial amendments in the Electoral Act. During the session, the Senate constituted a committee tasked with harmonising its version of the bill with that of the House of Representatives.
According to the Senate President, the harmonisation process is expected to be concluded within a short timeframe. He expressed confidence that once the committee completes its assignment within a few days or a week, the President will be in a position to give assent to the amended Electoral Bill within the month of February.

I believe that if you are able to conclude within this, in the next few days or one week, the President should be able to sign this amended Electoral Bill into an Act of Parliament within this month of February,” Akpabio told lawmakers, urging members of the committee to engage constructively with their counterparts in the House of Representatives.
He further explained that the 12-member harmonisation committee will work closely with the House to reconcile differences between the two versions of the bill already passed by both chambers. The move is aimed at ensuring legislative unity and preventing delays in the assent process.
Akpabio added that the expansion of the committee followed consultations with the leadership of the National Assembly, stressing the importance of cooperation between both chambers. He noted that a unified legislative position would strengthen the credibility of the amended Electoral Act ahead of future elections.
