Taraba Politics: Gov Kefas Denies Cash Incentives for Joining APC

Agbu Kefas, Governor of Taraba State, has dismissed allegations that he received financial inducement to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kefas spoke to State House correspondents on Wednesday after his first official meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa following his formal defection to the ruling party. He clarified that his decision was driven by conviction and the long-term interests of Taraba State, not by monetary incentives.

According to the governor, the move was carefully considered and aimed at strengthening cooperation and accelerating development outcomes for the state. He stressed that no individual or group offered him money to influence his political realignment. “I made my decision based on what I believe is best for Taraba State and its future. Nobody gave me money to join the APC,” he said.

Speaking on the 2027 general election, Kefas expressed confidence that he would deliver Taraba State for President Tinubu. He attributed this optimism to sustained grassroots engagement and policies that, he said, have earned public trust in his administration. “We have done our mapping and planning. I am on the ground with the people, and I have always said that my only responsibility in government is to serve them,” he stated.

The governor added that his discussion with the president focused on critical issues affecting the state, including security, agriculture, and social welfare. He described the meeting as productive and said it would enhance collaboration between the Taraba State Government and the Federal Government for the benefit of residents.

Kefas also appealed to citizens to embrace peace and unity, noting the coincidence of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim Ramadan period. He said the period offers an opportunity for prayers and renewed collective commitment to national development.

It will be recalled that Kefas, who was elected governor on the PDP platform in 2023, had initially scheduled his defection to the APC for November 19, 2025. The move was later postponed and eventually took place on January 31, 2026.
