The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it cannot prevent politicians from defecting to the party, describing the growing wave of defections as a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on Arise Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, addressed concerns over the increasing number of governors joining the APC, including the recent defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
Morka said the governors were aligning themselves with what he described as a “resurging Nigeria” under the Tinubu-led government, adding that the party would not block anyone seeking to join its fold.
According to him, acting as a gatekeeper would be undemocratic, stressing that the APC remains open to politicians who voluntarily choose to identify with the party’s direction.
Reacting to fears that the defections could lead to a one-party state, Morka dismissed the concerns, recalling that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) once governed Nigeria with a similar number of governors without undermining democracy.
He argued that political dominance should not be mistaken for an attempt to eliminate opposition parties.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, also officially joined the APC on Tuesday at a ceremony held in Jos.
